Katie Smith - Writer/Director
Katie Smith is a scriptwriter and film director based in Kent and London. She has a degree in Film Production from Canterbury Christ Church University and although Crossroads is her first short film, she has worked on a variety of productions since graduating including working on The History of Chance which won Best Film at Canada International Film Festival and Borderline, which won Best Film at Birdie Film Festival.
Katie's vision is clear. She wants to make films that allow the audience to feel the characters highs and lows. To make films that stand out and that bring in the audience in a way where they are compelled and moved. She enjoys creating films that are controversial, boundary breaking and in some ways "breaking the taboo" of an ideal. Crossroads was a great challenge for Katie, not just because it was her first film but because it was an LGBT film and as a heterosexual woman, she wanted to make sure it was made with tact and dignity.
Although the budget for Crossroads was tiny (£1275) and the premise huge, it was clear from the start that Katie and the rest of the cast and crew wanted to make Crossroads the best it could be with the budget they had.
Katie loves the entire filmmaking process and makes a huge point of spending time with each and every one on set, getting to know who their skills, what they are doing, what they can bring and helping to enhance others skills whilst also enhancing her own.
As a hobby, Katie is a judoka and enjoys reading and watching movies. A sucker for a good rom-com!
